Arch built in tribute to Lord Nelson restored
ONE of the earliest monuments built to commemorate Lord Nelson’s death and victory at the Battle of Trafalgar has been restored.
The 10-month programme of work on Nelson Gate has been finished after stonework had decayed. The arch, near Helmsley, was built as an entrance to Duncombe Park to commemorate the naval hero in 1806 - a year after he died. The work cost £90,000 and was partly paid for by the Country Houses Foundation and the North York Moors National Park Authority.
