Archbishop to give lecture reflecting on war and conflict

The Archbishop of York, John Sentamu, will give the first St Wilfrid Lecture of 2014 at Ripon Cathedral on the theme of ‘Beyond War and Conflict: Building Communities of Peace and Reconciliation.’

This year the St Wilfrid Lectures take the 100th anniversary of the First World War as a reference point to his speech later this week

A spokesman for the Diocese of Ripon and Leeds said yesterday: “Archbishop Sentamu gave the very first St Wilfrid Lecture in 2009.

“Speaking then on the subject of Rethinking Mission: the Church in Contemporary Society, he said that ‘the church must be a beacon, by offering the good news of christ not just in practical ways but also in a way that embraces the new, that explains the gospel in a way that is comprehensible and relevant to people today.”

The lecture series was started as a joint venture between Ripon Cathedral, the Methodist District of York and Hull, the Diocese of Ripon and Leeds and York St John University and invites high-profile theologians and public speakers to give lectures.

The Archbishop of York, who also holds the post of chancellor at York St John University, frequently speaks on international affairs in the House of Lords.

The lecture will take place on Thursday, February 27, at 7pm. Admission is free and open to the public.
