Archbishop guest at farm show fundraiser

Dr John Sentamu, Archbishop of York will be guest of honour at this year’s Malton Show in recognition of the Malton Agricultural Society’s 125th anniversary.

It will be the first time that he has visited the popular show which this year will raise money for nominated charity, Yorkshire Cancer Research.

The event will be held in the grounds of Scampston Park near Malton on Sunday, and is being organised by Malton Agricultural Society.

Committee member, James Patmore, said he and his colleagues were looking forward to welcoming him and preparations ahead of his visit were going well.

He said: “All the usual agricultural attractions, farm exhibits and class entries that appeal to everyone of all ages will be on display again this year and of course we feel very honoured to be welcoming the Archbishop to the show.

“Some of the other attractions will include live jazz music, free face-painting, a packed farmers’ market, craft show and a BMX stunt team and workshop for those who feel brave.

“We’ve also booked a caricature artist and a mime artist, ‘Purpleman of York’, who everyone will have seen standing motionless at some point in the city. This year’s show promises to be our biggest and best yet and we’ll be holding a huge raffle in the afternoon all in aid of Yorkshire Cancer Research.”

Yorkshire Cancer Research’s chief executive Mark Stevens said he was delighted the society had chosen Yorkshire Cancer Research as its nominated charity.

He said: “It’s only due to the kind support we receive from local people and businesses in Ryedale at fantastic annual events like this that we’re able to continue funding around £7m of vital research into cancer in Yorkshire and help make medical breakthroughs.

“Every penny we raise we spend in Yorkshire helping local people beat cancer by supporting world-class research, diagnosis and treatment in our region.”
