Archbishop joins church celebrations

THE Archbishop of York will join a North Yorkshire congregation in celebrating the 150th anniversary of the restoration of their church.

Dr John Sentamu will visit St Felix Church in Felixkirk, near Thirsk, to mark the event, preaching at 11am on Sunday to round off the parish’s festival weekend.

Organiser Sylvia Scatchard said it was in July 1858 when the then vicar and some influential residents started work to recover the church from its dilapidated state.

She added: “Using the young architect, William Hey Dykes, the church was extensively rebuilt to give the church we know today. The rebuild took 13 months and cost 1,6000.”

Events also include an organ recital by Dr Simon Lindley, the organist of Leeds Parish Church, at 7.30pm tomorrow. Tickets can be booked by calling 01845 597384.

Saturday features a Church Open Day with floral decorations, guided tours and organ recitals at 11am, 12 noon, 2.30pm and 3.30pm.
