Archbishop to lead prayers on city's walls for global religious celebration

Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu will lead prayers on the city walls of York as part of the Global Day of Prayer on Pentecost Sunday.

On Sunday at 5.45pm, thousands of people of all ages, denominations and traditions will gather at York's historic boundaries to join millions around the world in prayer for their homes, families, communities, nation, and world.

Afterwards the crowd will converge on the Minster from 6.30pm for a family service followed by a torchlight procession symbolizing the fire of Pentecost.

The events in York have been organised by One Voice York and Churches Together in York, a network of Christian churches and leaders of different denominations.

There will be a "Prayer in a Tent" in York Minster from today until Saturday, where One Voice York members will pray around the clock.

Member Juliet Wright.said: "Last year's Prayer on the Walls and Prayer in the Minster was received with such enthusiasm that it seemed right to do the same again this year."

This will be the last official Global Day of Prayer planned to run from 2005 until 2010. It will be the sixth year it has been held in York Minster. For more information visit www. onevoiceyork.org.uk.
