Archbishop opens £1m Yorkshire school building with latest green technology

THE Archbishop of York officially unveiled a £1m development been built to cope with the soaring number of pupils at one of the region's fastest growing schools.

Dr John Sentamu was the guest of honour at Cundall Manor School, near Thirsk, yesterday when he officially opened the state-of-the-art Jaytee Foundation Building.

The independent school's student roll has dramatically increased in the last decade, pupil numbers rising from 80 to 370 since 2000.

Dr Sentamu, who was also given a tour of the school, held a question and answer session with pupils and led the assembly yesterday.

The chairman of governors, Sir Thomas Ingilby, said: "We are absolutely delighted that Dr Sentamu was able to be our guest on what is an important milestone in the school's history.

"Not only did his attendance indicate the significance of the day, but it gave our pupils the chance to meet and talk to one of the country's most influential, respected and charismatic leaders."

Situated in the school's 50-acre grounds, the building is the new home for senior pupils and includes classrooms, changing rooms and showers, as well as a staff room and meeting room.

The development is set around a south facing courtyard and incorporates the latest environmentally friendly technology.

High-strength polystyrene blocks filled with concrete were used to give excellent insulation, and an air source heat pump provides hot water for the underfloor heating system and shower block.

Doors and window frames have been designed for minimum heat loss.

Originally a hunting lodge, the school was founded in 1958 as a boys' prep school but it is now co-educational with both day and boarding pupils between two and 16.
