Archbishop rededicates Crypt

A shelter for the homeless has been rededicated by the Archbishop of York after a £1.3m redevelopment.

Dr John Sentamu blessed St George's Crypt in Leeds, which now offers 15 individual rooms to homeless people and includes a refurbished caf, a lounge and three rooms for arts and skills training.

The Archbishop said: 'It is important that we have places where homeless and disadvantaged people can be offered practical care and support.

'I hope that the redevelopment work that has been carried out ensures that it remains at the heart of the community for years to come.'

The Archbishop was welcomed by the Rector and chairman of the Crypt trustees, the Rev Jonathan Clark. pictured. The HIgh Sheriff of West Yorkshire, the Lord Mayor of Leeds and the Bishop of Knaresborough were also there.

Crypt chief executive Chris Fields said he was 'delighted' that the Archbishop had agreed to lead the service. 'It is a wonderful way to celebrate the completion of our transformation into a place of change. The work of St George's Crypt remains as vital today as it was in 1930 when the Crypt first opened its doors to homeless and destitute people.'
