Archbishop takes prayers to the streets

THE Archbishop of York was in the city centre yesterday to offer prayers to shoppers to mark Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent.

Dr John Sentamu also shared breakfast with residents and staff at the city’s Arc Light Centre, before visiting patients at York Hospital during the morning. He said: “I think it is important that we meet people wherever they are. That might mean going out into the local shopping centre, or the hospital, or sharing time with people getting their lives back on track.

“Everybody goes through difficult times and sometimes we need someone to be there to listen.

“God values everyone and is always there to offer support for all.”

The Bishop of Hull, Richard Frith, and the Bishop of Whitby, Martin Warner, were also out on the streets to mark the Church of England’s Say One For Me event, where local ministers offer to pray with members of the public.
