Archbishop tours HQ of ex-offenders' charity

FORMER offenders had a long-awaited visit from the Archbishop of York at a resettlement home.

Dr John Sentamu spent much of yesterday morning touring the city centre headquarters of York Association for the Care and Resettlement of Offenders (YACRO), which helps provide housing and support to ex-offenders in North Yorkshire.

During the visit the Archbishop met the people currently staying at the centre and enjoyed a guided tour.

One former prisoner, Hazel, 29, who has been living at the centre in Robinson Court, York, said: "It was a brilliant day. He was very approachable and came across as very interested and concerned about people's situations and what was going on here.

"I got the chance to speak to him about group work we are setting up and give him a guided tour of the accommodation."

YACRO was established in 1972, and has grown to become a specialised and successful organisation providing housing and support to ex-offenders.

Last year it was recognised by the Government alongside 15 other partners including York Council, the Richmond Fellowship and the Salvation Army for its success in dealing with people who sleep rough in York.

YACRO director Pat Smith said: "It was a much anticipated visit and we are delighted that the Archbishop has taken the time to see us.

"The visit was very successful and all of our guests thought it was an excellent morning.

He said the Archbishop was familiar with the demands and challenges faced by YACRO and wanted to see its day-to-day activities, adding: "He spent a long time here and it was mainly talking to the people that live in the centre. They are always delighted to have visitors who are interested in what is happening to them and the things that are changing in their lives."

YACRO has occupancy levels of nearly 100 per cent across its housing schemes, which include 24-hour support flats for 14 people, six supported shared houses for 22 people and a scheme supporting up to 12 tenants in private accommodation.
