Archbishop's market mission to gather prayer requests

THE Archbishop of York took to the streets yesterday to gather prayers from the public on Ash Wednesday.

Dr John Sentamu and a team of ministers were stationed at locations in York to collect prayer requests before taking them to St Helen's Church in the city for a series of special services.

The initiative was part of the Church of England's Say One For Me campaign. The Archbishop also launched a facility on his website where visitors can post their prayers online.

The campaign is aiming to let the public know that their church is there to pray for them in the run-up to Easter when the spotlight is on suffering.

Dr Sentamu said: "The Church cares deeply about everyone. We want to listen to people in York and pray for whatever is going on in their lives.

"I think it is important that we meet people wherever they are.

"That might mean going out into the local shopping centre, or it might be by offering a space online for individuals to contact us whenever it is convenient to them. God is always there to offer support for those that need it."

Prayer requests can be sent via the Archbishop of York's website: www.archbishopofyork.org/761
