Archbishops’ records set to go online

EXPERTS have been awarded a major grant to digitise the registers of the archbishops of York spanning four centuries.

The registers of 21 archbishops between 1225 and 1646 – said to be one of the most important collections of historical materials in England – will be made available online for the first time following the project.

The series contain records from across the North of England, and give a unique insight into ecclesiastical, political and cultural history of a period that saw the Black Death, Wars of the Roses, Reformation and the Civil War.

They contain millions of
references to people and places covering architecture, almsgiving, sin, transport, buildings, church furnishings, weapons and war.

The work is being backed with a $299,000 grant by the Andrew W Mellon Foundation.
