Archer with her sights set on Olympics back at old college

CHAMPION archer Amy Oliver yesterday opened newly-extended sports facilities at her former college in the Dearne Valley.

The 24-year-old, who won silver in the Commonwealth Games and hopes to represent Great Britain at next year’s London Olympics, returned to Dearne Valley College yesterday afternoon to open its new gym.

After securing £225,000 of funding, Wath-based O&P Construction Services Ltd completed extension works to the gym back in July.

The refurbishment included creating a new single-storey extension to house gym equipment and a weights area.

Paul Townsley, Dearne Valley College principal and chief executive, said: “We are delighted that Amy has taken the time out of her busy training schedule to visit our facilities.

“The extension to the sports centre fitness suite and the addition of further sports equipment will allow us to extend our offer and services to the local community and continue to promote health and sport in college in line with Government initiatives.”

Miss Oliver, whose parents are both competitive archers, first picked up a bow at the age of seven and joined the Dearne Valley Archery Club 10 years later, before going on to become an international success.
