Argos ad banned over delivery time claims

An advert for Argos has been banned by a watchdog for implying customers could choose a specific delivery time for goods.

The television commercial featured two penguins making a delivery to a walrus who, according to the voiceover, spent most of its day hunting for food.

But imagine if the walrus could "Argos it", the ad said, claiming that: "With over 1,500 lorries we can deliver what you want at a time slot that's right for you."

Three viewers complained to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) that the retailer's claim was misleading and challenged whether it could be substantiated.

Argos said it offered a variety of delivery options to customers and weekday time slots such as morning (7am to 1pm) or afternoon (12pm to 8pm).

Depending on the type of items ordered, customers could also choose delivery within 48 hours.

Ruling that the ad must not be broadcast again in its current form, the ASA said: "We concluded that the ad was misleading."
