Armed police lay siege to Leeds house after man spotted with shotgun

ARMED police laid siege to a house in West Yorkshire for five hours at the weekend after a resident was seen in the street with a shotgun.

Officers cordoned off part of Shaw Leys at Yeadon, and marksmen trained guns on one semi-detached house.

Police repeatedly hammered on the door before officers forced an entry and a team of trained negotiators went in.

Negotiations went on with the man – who at times could be heard shouting back – for about five hours before he was finally led away by officers.

Police searching the house were later seen taking out a shotgun in a plastic bag and an air rifle also bagged up.

A silver Ford Transit van with roofing ladders on the top, a Mercedes 4 x 4 and a silver Audi saloon were parked at the front of the property.

Police said they had received a report of a man with a shotgun in Shaw Leys at about 1.45am on Saturday. They added that at about 11am a man had been arrested.

Neighbours said that the man who lived at the house for about 12 years had a wife and three sons – two of them grown up. But they had not seen her or the sons recently and it was believed they had moved out.

Today the arrested man was still in police custody.
