Army cadets arm themselves with spades and rakes at hall

AS military exercises go it was probably one of the more unusual that have been carried out in Yorkshire.

Yesterday saw 45 cadets from the Army Foundation College in Harrogate working alongside the gardeners and conservation volunteers at Beningbrough Hall, near York, to help clear and tidy a currently unused area of park.

The area will eventually be transformed into a new picnic area for visitors and walkers.

Garden and parkland manager Des Cotton said: “This is just the latest development in a series of plans to improve access to our wider parkland. Last year we launched a seasonal walking leaflet and now we’re building somewhere to enjoy your rest stop.

“The Army help to bring a lot of manpower. There is still some work we have to do, we have to plant the grass and that will take some time to grow but we hope it will be open in the autumn. There is a walking festival in October and I would like to have it open by then.”

It is hoped that projects like this will help them create ties to the area.
