Art group features ceramics and cards alongside paintings for show

PAINTINGS by some of the region's talented amateur artists – including some bargains for sale – were hung yesterday in preparation for this evening's opening of Haltemprice Art Group's 63rd annual art exhibition.

Eight trophies will be presented by the chairman of East Riding Council, Christopher Matthews, for six classes, including watercolour, oil and still-life, at the event at Cottingham Civic Hall.

The exhibition, by the 70 members of the group which meets weekly at Cottingham High School, includes framed and unframed pictures and a selection of hand-made cards and ceramics. About 90 per cent are for sale with unframed pictures going for 15 or less, and framed ones starting at 25.

This year, 162 framed pictures were submitted – slightly fewer than last year. This year's judge is retired art teacher Raymond Greenley.

Spokeswoman Jackie Churchman said nearly all the artists come from within eight miles of Cottingham.

"It's a mixed bunch but I would say the standard is pretty high," she added.

Hundreds of people are expected at the exhibition, which is open tomorrow and Friday between 10am and 5pm and between 10am and 4pm on Saturday.
