Art? It's a piece of cake

Artist Brian Griffiths with his Battenberg proposal for Trafalgar Square's empty plinth.

The giant cake made of bricks and an outsize blue cockerel were among six designs unveiled yesterday.

Six works are in the running to win a position at what has now become one of Britain's most famous art displays. Also competing for the honour is a church-style pipe organ which would blast sounds across the square each time someone used an attached cash machine.

The winner will replace the current work – Yinka Shonibare's large-scale Nelson's Ship In A Bottle.
