Artist couple drawn together for joint gallery exhibition

A COTTINGHAM couple who are both artists are giving people a chance to compare their work in a joint exhibition at Beverley Art Gallery.

Barry and Jill Carter are showing 40 paintings each which they have completed in the last two years in an exhibition entitled Being There.

Mr Carter is inspired by coastal locations, particularly Bridlington, Flamborough and Staithes, while also painting the inland waterways and boatyards of North Lincolnshire.

His wife prefers domestic interiors, such as the “unremarkable” corners of the Edwardian house she has lived in for 40 years, and the East Riding pubs and music venues where her beloved jazz is performed.

Mrs Carter, 75, whose father was a professional artist, makes sketches during performances before turning them into paintings.

She said: “It’s not so much the subject matter, it’s seeing things that will make a picture. The musicians are so busy with what they are doing they don’t notice me. Anybody who is totally engrossed in what they are doing is good to draw because they are not posing.

“I draw quickly; the faster the music, the faster the drawing.”

The exhibition runs until July 16 and the paintings are on sale with prices ranging between £200 and £800.
