Artist to help brighten seating area

Design work is now under way on an exciting scheme to transform an unattractive seating area in the middle of Milnsbridge, near Huddersfield.

Artist David Mayne has been appointed by Kirklees Council’s arts agency, Loca, to work with landscape architects and local children and young people to design improvements for the seating area near the junction of Market Street and Scar Lane.

The improvements are being jointly funded from the council’s regeneration budget along with funding from the Valleys Town and Valley Committee and will form the centrepiece of a wider enhancement scheme for Milnsbridge centre.

The scheme proposed for the site will include new decorative railings designed with help from the young people of Scar Lane and Cowlersley primary schools and Golcar/Milnsbridge youth group; stone paving, new seats and bins, a three-tier flower planter and a village mapboard which has been designed with the help of the Milnsbridge Enhancement Group.

Planning permission was granted earlier in June and it is hoped the works will be completed on site by February/March 2012.
