Artist who studied in India has open mind over festival

ARTIST and English lecturer Gorima Basu will be opening her Sheffield home to the public this weekend to showcase her paintings, as part of the annual “Open Up” festival.

Mrs Basu is one of 107 artists across Sheffield to be taking part in the event, which lets people walk into working art studios without appointments.

The 26-year-old, who has been painting since her childhood in Bengal, spent five years studying art in India before moving to England in 2000.

She said: “The paintings are either figurative landscapes or abstract.

“I’ve been taking part in Open Up for four or five years and have found that people like the landscapes more, although they appreciate abstract they’re not willing to buy it.

“In Open Up you get a chance to interact with people, you get to know what people’s views are and what sort of things they like you to do.

“I do quite a lot of local subjects but most of my landscapes are of India, as I know people like to see India through my paintings.

“I visit India every year as my family are still there. I do a lot of artwork over there and display my work there as well.”

Mrs Basu’s home at 99 Glenwood Crescent, Chapeltown, will be open between 11am and 5pm tomorrow and all the paintings will be for sale.
