An artistic alternative to pub crawl

A FREE night out – which has been billed as an alternative to the traditional pub crawl – is set to take place in Barnsley.

The art-themed “Alternative Nite Out” on Thursday next week will be the first of a number of planned nights which are drug and alcohol free.

It will include a tour of street artwork installations which have been created by people recovering from drug and alcohol problems.

Barnsley Council’s spokesman for adults and communities, Coun Jenny Platts, said: “Recovery through Art is a weekly art group for people in recovery that aims to use creativity to promote health and well-being and build confidence.

“The group’s original creations are borne out of discussions around binge-drinking and carry messages that encourage people to consider alternatives to over indulgence and binge drinking.”

The evening begins at 4pm at the Civic on Hanson Street, where maps showing the location of the installations can be collected. The last stop on the “art crawl” is at Viva Café on Regent Street South, with a chance to meet the artists.

Coun Platts added: “This will be a fun evening and an uplifting journey of discovery.”
