Artistic creations battle it out for spot in regionals

THE competition was tough and the conditions were the absolute strictest - but hair and beauty students did not buckle under pressure, creating inspirational and artistic creations that left judges in awe.

The winners of York College’s annual Hair and Beauty Competition go on to face competitors from across the north in the ultimate test of skill and creativity - and could go on to national finals.

Around 250 students competed in categories including fantasy hair and beauty, 1980s make-up, 1920s and 1940s and even Wall Street Crash - where media make up skills creating cuts and injuries were put to the test. The competition is attended by local employers, with some acting as judges.

Jayne Laverick, Head of Division for Hair, Beauty and Holistic Therapies at York College said: “The competition gives students the opportunity to showcase the skills they learn in the College’s training salons and in local hair and beauty salons, where many of them work as apprentices. Working under strict competition conditions, the students produce a very high standards and develop their creativity. The quality of work is truly outstanding.”

Foundation stage student Alex Cook, 19, is hoping to go on to study for a degree in media make up, special effects and hair dressing at the college.

She said: “This competition is great. We can showcase our creativity and get inspiration from others. It’s good fun and I love seeing everyone’s ideas.”
