Artist's box of changing images puts town's art gallery in new light

A FESTIVAL of audio visual art which is the first of its type in Rotherham has opened with a unusual exhibit which has seen the building of a large box in the centre of the town's art gallery.

The box, which is big enough for visitors to walk inside, contains a series of mirrors and white walls onto which is projected a continuously changing image generated by a computer. Curators of the festival, called Chromatologies, said the exhibit was the work of German media artist Carsten Nicolai, whose creations are partly science-based.

A spokesman said Nicolai's piece was called Unitxt and added: "For this particular presentation a room has been built in the centre of the gallery which from outside looks like a roughly-built box.

"However, when entered, the experience is intense and transformative. The surfaces are clean and white and large mirrors are fixed along the walls next to the projection screen. The mirrors expand the spatial impression and reproduce the visuals to infinity."

Chromatologies is running in parallel with the Rotherham Open Arts festival, which includes an installation of work by local sculptor Steve Hudson in the Old Market Building.

The festival runs for the rest of the month and also includes music and theatre perform-ances. Details at: 07593 414662 or www.rotherhamfestival.com
