Artist’s broad brush approach attracts acclaim for abstracts

Artist Jane Maguire moved to Londesborough last year and has spent the winter working hard on a number of paintings lit by fairy lights and decorative lamps which have gone on display at the village’s All Saints Church.

The exhibition will be open on Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday from 10am to 5pm.

As her first solo exhibition, the event has already proved such a success so quickly that she is now planning others in Goole and Spaldington.

She said: “It’s doing very well, better than expected, I sold six or seven paintings over the first weekend.

“People seem to particularly like my abstract paintings which are very unusual because they are lit from behind with fairy lights, which run off a battery so they can be hung anywhere.

“I’ve been painting for 20 years but never done anything like this. I never used to like abstracts but I got inspired last winter and they’ve really developed.

“I do all sorts of things, I’ve made a clock with glass and turned some wooden cones from Australia into ornaments using tiny crystals.

“The church is still the heart of the community and it is very strong community here.”
