Artists join up threads to stage unique needlework exhibition

TRADITIONAL needlework and contemporary textile designs are on show at a Yorkshire museum after a group of artists decided to pool their talents for a unique exhibition.

The Textile Art Group (TAG) includes members from across South and West Yorkshire and meets once a month at Halifax's Bankfield Museum to exchange ideas and learn new skills.

It can take up to two years for members to create enough work for a show, and their latest efforts make up the Threads of Design event at Cannon Hall Museum, Barnsley.

Group spokesman Jay Johnson said: "Our work is wide-ranging. At Cannon Hall visitors will see art quilting, hand and machine embroidery, appliqu, felting and fabric painting.

"The work varies from very traditional forms of embroidery to contemporary images."

Threads of Design is part of Cannon Hall's year-long series of exhibitions which focus on fashion, and some artists have produced work which can actually be worn.

Mrs Johnson added: "All our pieces interpret design and fashion. Some do this in amusing ways; there is a series of colour-related pieces using clothing idioms like Buttoned Up and Hot Under the Collar for titles. Other explore fashion history and the work of individual designers."
