Arts and Crafts table whets bidders’ appetite

A TABLE and chairs showed it had legs at auction - fetching six times its estimate.

The Arts and Crafts oak dining table with six dining chairs and two carvers was expected to make around £5,000 – but in the end went for £31,000 after a North/South bidding war.

The table, designed by Ernest Gimson, a contemporary and friend of William Morris, and chairs, were part of a house clearance of a farmworker’s cottage on a North Yorkshire estate.

The rest of the contents made just £500 when they went under the hammer at Scarborough auctioneer’s David Duggleby.

Auctioneer William Duggleby said: “There was a lot of interest in the week running up to the auction.

“Then on the day there were was an internet bidding war between a Northern dealer and a dealer in London – the Northern dealer won. This is the second best price we’ve ever achieved at Duggleby’s, and our best price ever for furniture.”

Meanwhile, a classic Ferrari recently discovered in a barn in Kendal fetched nearly twice its estimated price when it went under the hammer at the Bonhams Harrogate 2012 sale. The rare four-seater 1965 Ferrari 330GT 2+2 Berlinetta sold for £68,700, but it is thought could be worth as much as £150,000 when restored.

At the same sale a 1933 MG Midget J2/J4 Sports also topped its estimate, fetching £44,850.

Motorcycle fans can get their fill with an auction in Scunthorpe next week of bikes discovered inside the home of a former bike racing champion. Auctioneers instructed to clear the residence of Steve Tong, near Belton in the Isle of Axholme were astonished to find 14 motorcycles, ranging from road racing machines to dragsters, parked inside the house.

One - a highly collectable Honda VFR400R - had just 1.6 miles on the clock.

Viewing for the auction at CJM Asset Management is on Monday.
