Arts centre's birthday goes on-line via a virtual world

There will be drinks, speeches and a chance for artists to mingle with visitors.

There's nothing unusual about the first anniversary to celebrate the opening of the Goole arts centre – except it will all happen online.

The Junction has commissioned Halifax-based artists IOU to create a venue on Second Life, the online virtual world where users interact through three-dimensional virtual versions of themselves called avatars.

The launch will give the Junction global exposure – even if people don't show up in person.

If the venue looks realistic it is because it's been built using pictures taken by students at Goole High School.

Marketing officer Chris Williams said: "We're very excited. It's something unique, and it puts Junction and Goole at the forefront of breaking boundaries, embracing technology and searching for new ways to reach audiences."

He admits it's a "tough sell" as people will have to join Second Life to "attend" the launch, but he insists the process is quick, easy and free.

The staff have chosen their own avatars, and will be there to chat to people and show them round.

He said. "There's going to be a huge amount to interact with, you can listen to music by IOU, or go to the exhibition space where you can look at all the images over the past year.

"There's a lot of things that we are doing to try and make it fun.

The online venue will be launched this Sunday at 2pm.

Anyone who wants to attend should RSVP by email – [email protected] – or call 01405 763652.
