The North Yorkshire Open Studios event, which is in its ninth year, has become a mainstay of the county’s cultural calendar and will feature a vast array of works ranging from cutting-edge craft and design to contemporary sculpture, paintings and ceramics.

Among the new exhibitors this year is sculptor Joseph Hayton, a trained stonemason who has worked on projects from stone carving for stately homes to ecclesiastical restoration and will be opening up his workshop in Pateley Bridge.

Visitors to Scarborough’s Esplanade will be able to find out more about Victorian photographic techniques by visiting artists David and Angela Chalmers, while Rachel Anthill will be displaying landscapes inspired by a recent trip to the Himalayas at her remote studio in Swaledale.

The event’s director, Rick Faulkner of Chrysalis Arts, the Gargrave-based arts agency which established the showcase in 2005, said: “We are blessed with a range of inspiring landscapes in North Yorkshire, which help make our Open Studios one of the most spectacular open studio events in the country.”

He added: “In recent years it has shown significant growth both in the number of visitors it attracts and the amount and value of the sales it generates for North Yorkshire’s professional visual artists.

“At a time of economic difficulty, this is especially encouraging and demonstrates the value of the arts to the local economy.”
