Artwork by kidney patients goes on show at city hospital

DIALYSIS patients aged up to 93 have alleviated the boredom they endure throughout their treatment by producing works of art that have gone on display in York Hospital.

More than 20 patients aged between 30 and 93 from the hospital’s renal unit helped create three mosaics and a mural while they were hooked up to dialysis machines.

The patients, who spend up to 16 hours each week attached to the machines, painted tiles and fragments of glass for the project which has been overseen by professional artist Lesley Seeger.

She said: “It is wonderful to think that the artwork has not only helped the patients through their treatment, but they have now produced pieces which are on show to everyone in the hospital.

“It was great that they can now see that all the hours that they have committed to the project have been worthwhile.”

The mural has an choice mix of images ranging from wildlife to floral displays, while the mosaics have been themed loosely around gardens.

Staff at tile shops and glass manufacturers in the city provided the resources for the artwork.

Ms Seeger, who lives in York, is a qualified art therapist and has been a professional artist for the last 16 years.
