'Ashes to Ashes' star backs World Cup bid

ONE of the stars of Ashes to Ashes and Life on Mars has given his backing to Sheffield and England's 2018 World Cup bid as he travels to Wembley to watch the League Two play-off this weekend.

Actor Dean Andrews, from Rotherham, will be supporting The Millers as they take on Dagenham and Redbridge, in the same ground which could host World Cup matches in 2018 or 2022.

He said: "It would be fantastic if England won the bid and Sheffield was successful in becoming a host city.

"South Yorkshire isn't the most affluent area in the country and if the World Cup came here we could progress further with regenerating the region."

Andrews, who now lives in Upper Hoyland, Barnsley, added: "Everyone loves the World Cup in South Yorkshire. I've supported Rotherham since I was four years old – I've been brought up on football and it's part of my culture, like so many more in the region. It can only be a good thing to host the World Cup in Sheffield and put South Yorkshire on a world stage."

England will find out on December 2 if its World Cup bid has been successful. If the contest is hosted here, 12 of the potential 17 named grounds – which include Elland Road in Leeds and Hillsborough in Sheffield – will be used for matches.
