Attacked warder 'stable'

A PRISON officer who was seriously assaulted by an inmate at a Yorkshire jail was in a stable condition in hospital last night.

The 49-year-old man suffered bleeding on the brain, a broken cheekbone, jaw and eye socket. It is believed that he was punched and stamped on.

The injuries were initially believed to be life threatening but his condition was said to be stable yesterday.

The attack happened in Armley prison in Leeds at about 5.30pm on Tuesday.

Two men were arrested in connection with the attack.

One is 39, the other 25.
