It’s an image that will appear on new £10 notes but the painting it is taken from is expected to gain considerably more when it is auctioned in London next week.

The watercolour painting, which was commissioned by Jane Austen’s nephew, the Rev James Austen-Leigh, in 1869 is based on the only confirmed portrait of the famed novelist during her lifetime and is expected to fetch £150,000 at Sotheby’s English literature, history and children’s book and illustrations sale on December 10.

Also going under the hammer is a first edition of Charlotte Bronte’s classic love story Jane Eyre, which carries an estimate of £35,000 to £45,000.
