THE author of a new book on 1970s nightlife in Sheffield has launched a region-wide search for information on the whereabouts of some women pictured dancing on its front cover.

Neil Anderson, who has produced several books about Sheffield’s venues and nightclubs, is getting ready to launch the Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to 1970s Sheffield late next month.

He said he is looking to make the girls guests of honour at the launch party and appealed for anyone who knew them to come forward.

Mr Anderson said: “The two girls were entrants in a go-go dancing competition that took place in the Penny Farthing nightclub in 1970. It was a very high-profile and hard fought competition that boasted Sheffield sixties sensation Dave Berry as one of the judges.

“The go-go dancing craze was sweeping the nation at that time and the venue was packed. The photo is very evocative of the era and I’d love to have them at the launch if they’re still around.”

Mr Anderson said the Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to 1970s Sheffield is determined to prove the decade was one of the most exciting and influential in British history.

The author said the book “lifts the lid on the era that saw the city boast the largest nightclub in Europe, in the shape of Club Fiesta, together with venues like Crazy Daizy, Top Rank, Hofbrauhaus and Baileys”. The launch party is part of a Seventies Night at Penelopes on Arundel Gate on Saturday, October 23 as part of the Sheffield Council’s Off The Shelf festival.
