Author treats children (and their teddies) to a day of animal magic

CHILDREN at a leading independent school listen to tales from Yorkshire author Penny Dolan to mark a new chapter for their library.

To celebrate the opening of the new pre-prep library at Belmont Grosvenor School, based at Swarcliffe Hall, Birstwith, near Harrogate, pupils from pre-reception to Year 2 enjoyed fireside stories in their dressing gowns with their teddy bears.

Penny Dolan, who lives in Harrogate, spent the morning at the school running storytelling sessions and activities before officially opening the newly renovated pre-prep library.

Last year, Belmont Grosvenor's main library was re-opened in a similar literary vein by author Nicholas Allen, following a 30,000 refurbishment.

The acting deputy headteacher, Pam Dight, said the new pre-prep library would be well used by the children.

She added: "We thought it would be a nice idea to do the storytelling by the fireside as part of a celebration of the opening of the library – and the children have loved getting into their dressing gowns and bringing their teddies."

Penny Dolan has a long list of stories to her name, including The Tale of Rickety Hall, shortlisted for the 2001 Children's Book Award. Her latest book, A Boy Called Mouse, will be published later in the year.
