Award for girl who saved grandmother

Amy Chisholm, 15, was staying with her 85-year-old grandmother, who had just moved to Bridlington, when they were woken at 5am to the sound of someone running down the corridor and the smell of smoke and gas.

She rang the fire brigade, who gave her advice, but when a firefighter came to break the door open, it jammed.

Amy had to wrench the window out, before getting herself and her grandmother out of the flat, suffering smoke inhalation and injuring her ribs in doing so.

Amy, who is still receiving counselling for her traumatic experience, was presented the Young Person of the Year award, part of Humberside Fire and Rescue Service’s community awards at a ceremony at Hessle, near Hull.

She said: “When I got my award I nearly started crying, but I am really glad I got it.”

Gareth Cooke, 30, who made an early-morning rooftop dash to save a neighbour from a house fire in Gipsyville in Hull, won the Local Hero award.
