A woman who had not exercised since she was at school has shed five stone to improve her health.

Pamela Sellers, 58, has slimmed down from a size 30 to a size 22 in the last two years.

Now the Bradford mother is to be presented with an award in recognition of her determination to battle past a range of health problems by getting fit.

Mrs Sellers, who will be presented with Bradford Council’s b active award on Wednesday, suffered from high blood pressure and diabetes and was told by her doctor that she needed to lose weight to alleviate the conditions.

Having not exercised since she had been at school, Mrs Sellers, was nervous about entering a gym for the first time.

But staff at Richard Dunn Sports Centre in Bradford helped put together a suitable programme of exercise and she even started booking herself on to the Beep scheme, which is exercise on prescription.

Mrs Sellers, of Cooper Lane, Bradford, said: “I was overweight and unhealthy and I knew I needed to do something about it as I wanted to fly to Canada and was told my blood pressure was too high.

"I was determined to get fit and lose weight and I’m really proud of myself and I hope other people will see if I can do it then so can they. I really enjoy the keep-fit classes and all the staff are very friendly and have given me a lot of support, help and advice."

Mrs Sellers took part in Aquasize keep-fit classes and her training soon increased to one-hour work-outs twice a week.

She lost two-and-a-half stone in just over six months and flew to Canada.

Councillor Paul Flowers, Bradford Council’s portfolio holder for Culture, Tourism and Sport, said: “It’s great to see how regular exercise, together with a healthy diet, has played such a big part in helping Pamela to regain her health.

“She is a great example to us all particularly anyone with health problems that can be alleviated by adopting a healthier lifestyle. We are delighted to be presenting her with our latest b active award. She really deserves it.”

Bradford Council's b active campaign was launched in 2003 to encourage people across the district to be more active.
