BA back at Leeds after 32 years away

OLYMPIC boxer Luke Campbell lent some heavyweight – or bantamweight – support yesterday to the start of British Airways’ flights from Leeds Bradford to Heathrow.

Campbell, from Hull, joined business leaders, customers and airport staff to welcome BA back to Yorkshire after a 32-year break.

The local hero, who became the first boxer in the bantamweight category to win Olympic gold for Britain in more than a century at the London 2012 Games, met the first flight with Andy Lord, British Airways director of operations and John Parkin, chief executive at the airport.

The aircraft was greeted by a water cannon salute from the Fire Service.

Andy Lord said: “This is all about the best of British and I am delighted that one of our Olympic gold medallists helped celebrate British Airways’ return to Leeds Bradford Airport.”

Mr Parkin added: “This new service is a significant milestone for Leeds Bradford Airport and I urge businesses to take advantage of British Airways’ global network to stimulate further economic growth for the Leeds City Region.”
