Balaclava-clad gang grab cash machine

DETECTIVES were last night hunting a gang of balaclava-clad raiders who stole a cash machine from a North Yorkshire village post office.

A chain was attached to a stolen Nissan Navara to pull a section off the front of the post office in Scorton at about 1.15am yesterday before the ATM was taken.

The Nissan was stolen from Patrick Brompton a short time earlier and had not been located yesterday.

The cash machine was recovered a few minutes after the burglary, and the Yorkshire Post understands no money was missing.

The three raiders wore dark trousers, bomber jackets and balaclavas, and Detective Inspector Darrin Knight, of Northallerton CID, urged anyone with information to come forward.

Shortly before the burglary, thieves made an unsuccessful attempt to steal a pick-up from a property in Catterick Garrison. Officers believe the offenders may have been spotted in a Ford Transit flatbed truck, with yellow markings on its sides, in the area in recent weeks.

Anyone with information is urged to call North Yorkshire Police’s non-emergency number, 101.
