The Jamie Payne-Ross Award was presented to pupil Laurence Patterson at St Mary’s School in Menston, Leeds.

The presenter was Callum Hall, also pictured, who has a rare infection called an epidural abscess on his spine, thought to be the result of being stung by a sea urchin while on holiday on the Greek island of Skiathos last September. The abscess burst and damaged Callum’s spinal cord, paralysing him from the chest down. The school award is presented annually in memory of Jamie Payne-Ross who died in an accident in December 1993.

Martin Green, faculty leader of PE and Sport said Laurence was an outstanding pupil. “He is an extremely talented rugby player, a skilled footballer and shows great potential as a sprinter – an all-round sportsman who is also a very pleasant young man.”
