Bank boss stabbed as he confronts robbers

A BANK manager was stabbed at a Lloyds TSB branch in South Yorkshire when he was confronted by armed robbers who had hidden in the premises overnight.

The staff member had arrived to open the branch in Beckett Road, Wheatley, Doncaster, at around 8.30am on Monday but came face-to-face with two masked men who had broken in while the bank was closed.

Detectives believe they had gained access some time over the weekend by smashing a hole in brickwork at the back of the building.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said yesterday: “On arrival to open the bank in the morning, a staff member was confronted by the two men who were in possession of a knife and a gun. They tried to gain access to the safe but were unsuccessful and left the premise in a blue 07 plate Ford Focus. This was later found abandoned off Stafford Road.

“The staff member was stabbed in the leg twice and was taken to hospital.”

The robbers are described as both about 5ft 8in tall and of medium build.

One had a local accent and the other a Middle Eastern accent.
