Banking giant HSBC's top two bosses have given away to charity shares worth more than £1.3m, it emerged yesterday.

Chairman Stephen Green has given away 124,979 shares worth nearly 850,000 to the Bishop Radford Trust, a Christian charity of which both Mr Green and his wife are trustees.

Chief executive Mike Geoghegan is giving away 74,000 shares worth 500,000 to three charities including Education Africa, for which his wife is an ambassador.

The shares vested under a long-term incentive scheme based on the bank's performance between 2007 and 2009.

Mr Green, who is an ordained minister, has given away all his awarded shares after tax, while Mr Geoghegan has donated one-third of the 223,000 shares which he received under the scheme.

A bank spokesman said it was a personal matter and the bank had no comment.
