Both members of staff present fled to the rear of the building and the man made off empty-handed.

DC Sean Donoghue, who is leading the police investigation, said yesterday: “Natwest Bank has today announced that they will offer a substantial cash reward to anyone who offers information which leads to the arrest and conviction of the suspect.

“This was a traumatic experience for the staff – they were both scared for their lives.

“I would appeal to anyone who knows who this man is, anyone who has seen someone they know with strange items put together to look like an explosive device or anyone who knows someone who has been researching how to make an explosive device to contact me before he tries to do this again.”

The robber is described as an Asian man with a beard. He was wearing dark clothing, a baseball cap and glasses.
