Bank robber provides 'pennies from heaven'

Shoppers are being urged to hand back hundreds of pounds in cash which was thrown in the air by a bank robber as he made his escape.

The robber claimed he was armed and threatened staff at Barclays Bank in Jewry Street, Winchester, Hampshire, who handed over 1,600.

But as the robber left the bank, he threw the money into the air for no apparent reason, according to police. Detectives are now calling on members of the public who picked up the money to return it to their nearest police station because they say it is "evidence" in the case.

It is understood that only about 300 has been recovered so far.

Hampshire Police said a man was arrested after the robbery, on Tuesday afternoon.
