Bar boss faces action over door supervisor

A BAR manager was discovered to be employing in-house door supervisors without holding the appropriate licence during pub inspections in the east of Sheffield.

Licensing officers from South Yorkshire Police and a Security Industry Authority investigator targeted the pub, which officials are refusing to name, at a shopping centre after receiving intelligence that a door supervisor was working at the venue despite having his SIA licence revoked.

Although this was not confirmed during the evening because the individual was not on duty, the bar manager was found not to hold the necessary SIA licence. He was interviewed under caution and enquiries are ongoing.

One door supervisor checked at the venue was correctly licensed, while another was found to have left the premises.

Police say further investigations are being conducted into this individual.

It was also found that the venue had no means of checking staff, such as a log book or signing in sheet and an Improvement Notice was issued by the SIA requiring that this be put in place.

Two other bars in the city centre were also checked on the night and no issues were found. In total during the evening 10 individuals were inspected, finding nine operatives who held a valid SIA licence and the bar manager who did not.

SIA head of investigation Nigel Davies said: “This was an intelligence-led operation which successfully targeted non-compliance in this area.

“We will continue to work in partnership with South Yorkshire Police to clamp down on those willing to break the law.”

“I remind those who manage or supervise door supervisors that they must themselves be licensed, and they can check our public register of licence holders to ensure that their employees are working legally.”

Licensing enforcement officer Andrea Marsden said: “The operation was another good example of partnership working between the police and SIA.”
