Bar chat cheers hospice with £200,000 charity contribution

LIKE many of the best ideas, it started with a brief discussion over a pint at the bar.

But no-one could have imagined that six years on, one of the region’s leading charities would have benefited from a donation totalling more than £200,000.

Regulars at The Coach and Horses pub in Harrogate have helped raise the six-figure sum for the Martin House Children’s Hospice in Boston Spa through weekly events including raffles and quiz nights.

The hospice was selected as the pub’s chosen charity after the landlord and owner, John Nelson, was told about its work by one of his regulars.

He said: “I had said that it is so hard to choose a good cause when someone mentioned Martin House.

“I went and met the staff and decided to start raising money for them.

“It really is a win-win situation – the customers love getting involved, there’s a lovely atmosphere in the pub as a result and we are raising money for a very worthwhile cause.”

The money raised has so far helped pay for three cars for the hospice’s nurses to use for home visits – as well as buying specialist medical equipment.

Regular donors of raffle prizes include local businesses such as Rooster Knaresborough, Daleside in Starbeck and Elite Meat.
