Bar’s hours extension bid opposed

PLANS to extend the opening hours of a café bar in Hull’s Old Town look set to be rejected.

Zillis, on Posterngate, wants to extend its opening hours from 8am until 1am on Fridays, Saturdays and Bank Holidays and from 8am to 11pm on Sundays to Thursdays.

But the ground floor bar, opposite Holy Trinity Church, faces opposition from the council’s environmental health department as well as two residents in the flats above, who have complained about the lack of sound-proofing and being disturbed by noise.

Humberside Police officers have said longer hours will add to problems of anti-social behaviour and disturbance in the area.

Planners are recommending refusal when Hull Council planning committee meets next Wednesday.

A report states: “It is accepted that this is a city centre location with many similar uses in the vicinity, but critically this property has flats directly above and therefore the relationship between the proposed use and the residential neighbours is much more sensitive.”

The Old Town has been subject to various attempts to boost the night-time economy, seen as critical to revitalise the city centre.
