Battle cry as incinerator plans finally submitted

LONG-AWAITED proposals for a contentious waste incinerator plant in North Yorkshire have finally been submitted, with campaigners vowing to step up the fight to have it scrapped before it makes it through the planning process.

The application for the multi-million pound plant, which is earmarked for a site between York and Harrogate at Allerton Park, was submitted to North Yorkshire County Council yesterday and is one of the biggest ever to be considered by the local authority.

The scale of the project means that the application is not likely to be considered by councillors for up to another year to give council officers time to analyse the proposals.

Last night, North Yorkshire Waste Action Group (NYWAG), which has collected more than 10,000 signatures in protest over the plans, said it would be lobbying central Government over the next few months to get the final decision wrested away from the county council to be made by a planning inspector instead.

Andrew Jones, the Conservative MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough, said: “This decision should be called in and I will be lobbying alongside them.

“We have been expecting this application to be submitted for some time and while I wait to see what it says, I have been against this proposal from the start.”

The application is currently being validated by planning officers and is expected to be made publicly available in the coming weeks.

Bill Jarvis, project manager of developer AmeyCespa, said: “This is the most up-to-date, cost effective and end-to-end solution to deal with North Yorkshire’s waste.”
