Battle to keep library in the picture

BOOK-lovers in a Sheffield suburb will dust off the archives and display photographs of an under-threat library and the area tomorrow.

Walkley Library, which opened in 1905, is the city’s only Carnegie Library, built with funds that were donated by the famous philanthropist.

But now it is under threat as one of 15 to be closed in Sheffield as part of council cuts.

The event, run by local people fighting to keep it open, includes story times and craft activities for children and runs from 9.30am to 12.30pm

Meanwhile, Hull Council chiefs have launched a consultation over the future of the mobile
library service which faces the axe.

The service currently makes fortnightly stops at a wide range of locations in the city. But the city’s library services need to cut spending by £415,000 by the end of March next year as part of millions of pounds of cuts.

Coun Terry Geraghty, portfolio holder for Culture, Leisure, Events and Public-Wellbeing, said: “The council welcomes feedback from users of the service and residents as it will help us with the decision- making process and the future of the mobile service.”
