Battle to save music library as axe looms

CAMPAIGNERS have called for a rethink on plans to axe a Yorkshire-based library containing one of the country’s largest collections of musical scores and plays.

The Wakefield-based collection is currently supported by 12 local authorities but is facing closure in March because of cutbacks.

Leeds MP Greg Mulholland has called for more time to be given to help safeguard the future of the collection, which is used by music and drama groups.

The MP has been contacted by Otley Choral Group, the Adel Players and Ilkley Choral Society, who have backed the campaign.

He said: “It is deeply concerning that a decision on the future of the Yorkshire Libraries and Information Music and Drama Services, has been made so abruptly and without any public consultation on the matter.

“I was contacted by a number of constituents and local groups who are concerned about the potential ending of the service.”

Meanwhile, councillors in Leeds believe the collection could be moved from Wakefield to the city.

Leeds councillor John Procter, leisure spokesperson for the Conservative group, believes Leeds could adopt the collection.

Leeds Council has recently approved plans to fit out a new archive facility in Morley which will be used to house the West Yorkshire archives.

With further work it could re-house the music and drama library, he said.

“It would be a tragedy if the facility and its contents were lost forever. We should be doing everything we can to support the performing arts in Leeds.

“We are asking that the Yorkshire Libraries and Information Council postpone any decision until the new facility in Morley is operational.

“We want officers of Leeds City Council to investigate the possibility of adopting the collection.”

A meeting to decide the collection’s future takes place today.
