Battlefield homes war of words to rage on

They will now have until January 8 to comment on Persimmon Homes’ planning application to build 700 homes in the village, which is expected to go before York Council at the start of next year.

It comes after Fulford ward councillor Keith Aspden launched a petition earlier this month calling for more consultation opportunities, which has already gained over 100 signatures.

Coun Aspden said: “There are still concerns locally about the level of proposed consultation ahead of the submission of the latest planning application for the Germany Beck development. I believed more consultation was important because these plans aren’t just covering the minor details and many of the issues will affect the whole of Fulford, not just the immediate surrounding area.

“Following this campaign, the developers have confirmed they are extending the deadline from December 31 to January 8. It is hoped that this will give local residents more time to view consultation documents and submit their comments.”

The plans for the Germany Beck development sparked opposition from both academics and historians, who have claimed the homes could actually be built on the site of the Battle of Fulford.

The battle, when the invading Viking army, led by Harald Hardrada, triumphed over the English forces, is seen as key in the run-up to the Battle of Hastings and William the Conqueror being crowned King of England.

Historians have attempted to pinpoint the location of the battlefield as campaigners tried to halt the development.

But outline planning permission was granted for the housing scheme in 2007 after a public inquiry.

Persimmon Homes was unavailable for comment.
